ELI 084 Academic Writing

Read the entire paper once.  Answer the questions below.  If you answer “no” to any question, make useful suggestions in the space provided.

1.  Read the introduction again.  Discuss the following points with your partner:

-Does it make you interested in the paper? ___

-Does it provide enough background information about the topic? ___

-Does the thesis statement state clearly what the author’s point of view is?___

2.  Read the body paragraphs.  Address the following points with your partner:

-What organization format does the paper have: block or point-by-point?

-Does each body paragraph have a topic sentence? ___  If not, should topic sentences be added? ­­___

-Are there clear transitions between paragraphs? ___

-Is the support within paragraphs logical?  Are there specific examples that help to explain the authro’s ideas?  Discuss each paragraph separately. 

           

-Discuss any questions you may have about the content.  Ask for more details, reasons, or other clarification.

3.  Read the conclusion.  Address the following points with your partner:

-Does it restate the main point and summarize the main ideas? ___

-Is there a strong concluding comment (discussion about the future with or without the author’s position enacted, a dramatic statistic or example, etc.? ___ 

-Discuss any suggestions or comments you may have.
